Toheed Transcript

My name is Toheed and I'm part of the Finance Business Partnering Function at the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero.

I work as an Assistant Finance Business Partner, where you work with the colleagues who deal with the budgets and forecast. We make sure the businesses are in line with the budgets that that has been allocated to them, and we keep a track record of it; that every penny that they spend, it delivers the value for money for the taxpayer.

For me, the Government Finance Function is more than just numbers. It's about people. It's a fantastic platform for the Civil Servants who work in different government departments who come together, share their expertise, their knowledge, and their experience. And somebody like me can take benefit of that. There are always, you know, opportunities available for you to take part.

Civil Service Learning is such a great tool where you can find from a basic level course or any high, you know, experience that you require. You can get it from there. And there are loads of different courses that you can take part in and your department will encourage you to do that.

The number that is very close to my heart is 44 because 44 million is the budget of the area that I look after. And every time I have to make sure, when I make any decisions, that every penny that is going out of that budget is being used efficiently and effectively, because it's taxpayers’ money. I feel proud when I see that impact of our work in the society, especially Net Zero.

For me, the Civil Service was not just a career. I chose this life because I was passionate about public sector finance, not just a private sector finance. I wanted to pursue this in the Civil Service because you want to make the change. You want to do something for the public.
