Where to start

Where to start

There are three ways to begin your career in the GFF. Whatever route you choose, you can find helpful advice on how to put your application together, here.

Whether you’re a senior leader, an experienced finance professional, or looking for an entry-level role where you can learn (and get qualified) on the job, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to join us by following the link below. Remember – you’ll be applying for a role with a government organisation, not with the GFF.

As an apprentice in the GFF, you’ll be paid to learn on the job. Getting relevant experience. Gaining valuable skills. All while working towards a professional qualification that will give you the foundation you need to build an exciting finance career within the Civil Service, or beyond.

I joined after years of working in the private sector because I was looking for a greater sense of accomplishment and opportunity. And now I have it.

What roles are there?

What roles are there?

Every government organisation needs finance. Which means lots of career options. Lots of skills to learn. And lots of opportunities for progression. To help make sense of it all, we’ve organised all our roles into eight distinct job families. We call this the Finance Career Framework.

Using the framework, you can find out more about each job family. Discover what’s available and plan your future career by looking ahead at what qualifications, skills and experience you need to take on each role.

Along with these roles, your passion for finance could lead you to a role in the Government Internal Audit Agency (GIAA), where you’ll be involved in auditing government spending and counter fraud investigations. The GIAA plays a huge role in government finance, and you’ll still get all the benefits of the GFF if you join them.

We need people who are good with numbers who care about policy. I think the interaction between the two is what makes good government.

Applying for a role

Applying for a role

Once you’ve found a role you’re interested in, you’ll launch your application through Civil Service Jobs. The next step will be providing information about your skills, experience and motivation. Depending on the role, you might need to send a CV, personal statement or an application form. Your application will then be reviewed, and you’ll invited to complete online tests, assessments or interviews.

There are lots of different organisations, but they all share the values of being fair, inclusive and respectful. And you’ll feel those values throughout the recruitment process. You’ll get plenty of opportunities to ask questions and find out everything you need to know along the way.

Reasonable adjustments

Reasonable adjustments

If you need reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process, all you need to do is let the hiring team know. You’ll be asked if you need any adjustments when you launch your application through Civil Service Jobs, but you can request them at any stage.

All the organisations that are part of the GFF are Disability Confident employers. Which means you’ll be able to trust in their support throughout the hiring process, and after you join too.
