The budget builder

The budget builder

As part of the Government Finance Function (GFF), you’ll be a key part of managing the nation’s budget. But what does that actually mean?

Each financial year, we help determine how taxpayer money is spent. Together with ministers and government organisations, that makes us responsible for how everything from education to emergency services is funded. It’s the biggest balance sheet in the country, and managing it involves making big, sometimes difficult, decisions.

Build your own budget

Build your own budget

With our online budget builder, you can have a go at deciding how to allocate funds, and where. It’s not just about numbers – it’s about strategy, priorities, and making tough decisions. You’ll need to think critically, balance the needs of the nation, and consider how your choices could impact communities across the country.

You can play solo to get a better understanding of how complex managing public money can be. Or with a group, where you can discuss how to allocate funds and simulate the kinds of discussions we have here at the GFF.

Who knows, it might even inspire your next career move.

If you’re a teacher, the budget builder is a fun, interactive way to help students understand how public money is spent and see what it’s like to make real-world budgeting decisions.

Getting students to take on the role of decision makers won’t just educate them about how government works. It’ll also help them develop their critical thinking skills and appreciate the impact of financial choices.
